Open for Business
Hazelwood is a warm, welcoming, ethnically-diverse neighborhood with unique features that appeal to residents and merchants alike. The Hazelwood Main Street Task Force works with local businesses, residents and community organizations to revitalize our local business district and to strengthen our community. Through partnerships with neighborhood organizations, real estate developers, government and businesses, the Hazelwood Main Street Task Force is always working to develop new businesses, storefront improvements, residential and commercial developments, preservation projects, and rejuvenated open spaces. By working with the City of Pittsburgh and the National Main Street Center, we are participating in a citywide and nationwide revitalization of local businesses and shopping districts. The Hazelwood neighborhood takes great pride in its multi-cultural community and holds regular community happenings, including neighborhood clean-ups, an annual 5K Walk/Run, a Spring Flower Sale, and a Halloween Gazebo event for families. Located just south of Downtown Pittsburgh, Hazelwood is also a bustling commuter route for suburban employees working in the city’s core. Community Resources and Links
Development Potential
Only five miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, Hazelwood serves as a gateway to
Pittsburgh’s business and educational centers. The 15,000 commuters that travel Second Avenue on their drive to these centers are an untapped
resource that could prove priceless to the Hazelwood business community. Also, various businesses are needed to fill in the gaps not served by
existing neighborhood stores and restaurants. With the designation of a part of Hazelwood as a Keystone Opportunity Zone, new businesses will
realize state tax abatements. Through proper marketing and business development, Hazelwood will regain the economic stability that it has had in the past.

Situated on the northern shore of the Monongahela River, Hazelwood once had a booming business district, boasting three supermarkets, two theaters, and numerous other thriving businesses. With the close of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Mill, this prosperity began to fade into the past. Recent changes, such as future development of the former LTV site, the Waterfront development in Homestead, and the South Side Works development, have put Hazelwood in a position to reinvent itself and flourish once again.
